October 17, 2025 ・
how to improve hair salon business
A successful hair salon relies on essential tools, efficient systems, and professional equipment to enhance client satisfaction and operational efficiency.

How do you know you’re in a hair salon when you walk into a new beauty business?

If I were to guess, it’d be the buzz of hair dryers in the background, the scent of shampoo, and all the other hair salon equipment present.

Every chair, tool, and system plays a role in how smoothly a hair salon runs and how happy your clients feel when they walk out the door. Yet, many salon owners underestimate how much the right equipment (and software) affects efficiency, consistency, and profitability.

In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to run a modern, profitable hair salon, from chairs and clippers to a booking system that saves you hours every week.

Hair salon equipment and supplies

I’ve categorised this into four groups to simplify the list.

A. Reception area

First impressions matter. Your reception area sets the tone for your entire salon experience. Clients should walk in and instantly feel they’re in professional hands.

  1. Cash register: For salons that still handle some payments in cash, a simple and secure register keeps transactions organised.
  2. Laptop or PC: Useful for managing appointments, inventory, payments, and marketing, especially when synced with your salon software.
  3. Lighting: Bright, inviting lighting that enhances both your reception aesthetics and your clients’ first impression.
  4. Management software (e.g., Splice): This is the backbone of a modern salon. Splice is an all-in-one management platform that helps you manage bookings, automate reminders, process payments, and track staff performance.
  5. Phone: A reliable phone line remains vital for handling client calls and quick inquiries.
  6. Printer: Useful for printing receipts, reports, and booking confirmations when needed.
  7. Reception desk and chair: This is the command centre of your salon, where your front desk staff welcome clients.
  8. POS System: Allows your hair salon to process customer transactions and more. If you use Splice, POS functionality is already built in.
  1. Waiting area chairs: Comfortable seats for your clients to relax while waiting. Bonus points for adding a small table or magazines for an elevated experience.

B. Hair cutting, styling & treatment tools

Here’s what every modern salon should have:

  1. Blow dryers: Professional-grade dryers designed to control heat and airflow, helping you dry, smooth, or add volume efficiently. Look for models with multiple speed and temperature settings, cool-shot buttons, and diffusers for texture control.
  2. Clippers (corded and cordless): Precision grooming tools used for cutting and shaping hair.
  3. Clipper guards: Snap-on attachments that control cutting length and protect the scalp. It’s used for achieving consistent fades and trims.
  4. Clipper lubricant: Oil or spray used to reduce friction and extend the life of your clipper blades. Regular maintenance ensures smoother cuts and less overheating.
  5. Combs and brushes: Includes a mix of wide-tooth, detangling, paddle, and round brushes.
  6. Crimping iron: A heat styling tool that creates zigzag or crimped textures, adding volume and visual interest to styles.
  7. Curling iron and wands: Tools that shape curls or waves, available in various barrel sizes and coatings (ceramic, titanium, or tourmaline) to suit different hair types and heat preferences.
  8. Cutting combs: Fine-toothed combs that help section hair precisely during cutting. Often used with shears or clippers for control and accuracy.
  9. Flat iron (straightener): Used to smooth or straighten hair by applying heat between ceramic or titanium plates.
  10. Hair steamers and processors: Equipment that uses steam or controlled heat to open hair cuticles, enhance deep conditioning treatments, or accelerate colour processing.
  11. Razors and blades: Used for texturising, thinning, or creating soft, feathered cuts.
  12. Scissors and shears: Professional-grade cutting tools designed for precision.
  13. Sectioning clips: Durable clips used to hold hair in place during cutting, colouring, or styling, ensuring clean sections and control.
  14. Shear maintenance kit: Includes oil, tension adjusters, and cleaning cloths to keep your shears sharp, smooth, and long-lasting.
  15. Shear storage case: Protective case for organising and safely storing your cutting tools between appointments.
  16. Tweezers: Precision tools for removing stray hairs or fine detailing around the hairline or brows.

C. General equipment

These are the everyday tools that keep your salon safe and efficient for both your team and your clients.

  1. Bowls, dishes & blending tools: Used for mixing hair colours, treatments, and masks. Non-reactive materials like glass or plastic ensure safe and even blending.
  2. Containers & dispensers: Keep shampoos, conditioners, oils, and sanitisers neatly organised and easy to access.
  3. Fire extinguisher: A must-have safety item for every salon. It ensures a quick response to small fires, especially around electrical equipment or heat tools.
  4. First-aid kit: Includes basic supplies such as bandages, antiseptics, and gloves. It comes in handy for the quick treatment of minor cuts or burns that can occur during styling or cleaning.
  5. Hot towel cabinet: Keeps towels warm and ready for client use during facials, shaves, or treatments, adding a touch of comfort and luxury to your service.
  6. Magnifying lamps: Provide close-up, bright lighting for detailed work like eyebrow shaping, facial treatments, or scalp analysis.
  7. Ring light: Adjustable LED light that enhances visibility for precise work and creates flattering lighting for client photos and social media content.
  8. Salon cart or trolley (on wheels): Portable storage units that keep frequently used tools, like brushes, combs, and clips, within reach and easy to move between stations.
  9. Styling chairs/salon chairs: Adjustable, hydraulic chairs make it easy to work efficiently while keeping clients comfortable.
  10. Styling stations: These are the workhorses of your salon, with built-in storage, electrical outlets, and sleek surfaces that blend practicality with style.
  11. Shelves (for retail display): Showcase hair products, styling tools, or treatments available for sale.
  12. Sinks & backwash units: Designed for client comfort during shampooing and rinsing.
  13. Sound system: Sets the tone of your salon. Calming or upbeat music enhances the client experience and helps create the right atmosphere.
  14. Steriliser: Used to sanitise tools like scissors, combs, and tweezers.
  15. Tool kit: A small set of screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches to handle quick repairs and adjustments on salon furniture or equipment.
  16. UV light towel warmer: Uses ultraviolet light to warm and disinfect towels, ensuring freshness and hygiene.
  17. Washing machine & dryer: Keeps your salon stocked with clean, fresh towels and capes, a small but crucial part of smooth daily operations.

D. Supplies

The consumables and everyday items that keep your salon clean and ready for clients.

  1. Cleaning supplies (broom, dustpan, vacuum): Keep your workspace spotless. Hair clippings, dust, and product spills are inevitable, so daily cleaning tools are non-negotiable.
  2. Cutting cape: Protects clients from hair clippings, dyes, and water during styling or cutting. Look for lightweight, waterproof, and easy-to-clean fabrics.
  3. Disinfectant spray/jar (for combs, tools, and equipment): For maintaining hygiene and preventing cross-contamination between clients. Choose salon-grade disinfectants for best results.
  4. Floor mats: Anti-fatigue mats placed at styling stations to reduce strain on stylists’ legs and back during long hours of standing.
  5. Hair care products: Includes shampoos, conditioners, masks, and treatments that cater to different hair types and client needs.
  6. Hair dye & colour supplies: Everything needed for colouring services, from dyes and developers to tint brushes, mixing bowls, and foils.
  7. Hair styling products (pomade, gel, hairspray): Used to finish and hold styles in place.
  8. Hand & wall mirrors: Portable and mounted mirrors allow clients to check their hair from all angles before leaving the chair.
  9. Latex gloves & masks: Protect stylists’ hands and lungs during chemical treatments and cleaning.
  10. Neck strips: Disposable paper strips that create a hygienic barrier between the client’s neck and the cape. They also prevent loose hair or products from slipping under the collar.
  11. Salon towels & paper towels: Used throughout the day for drying hair, wiping hands, and cleaning up spills. Keep plenty on rotation and wash frequently.
  12. Sanitisers: Hand sanitisers should be available at every station for stylists and clients. Choose alcohol-based options that dry quickly without residue.
  13. Sharpening service and supplies: Regular maintenance for scissors and clippers ensures precision cuts and tool longevity. Have a trusted local sharpening service or keep sharpening stones on hand.
  14. Shampoo & conditioner: The foundation of any wash-and-care service.
  15. Signboard: Your external display that communicates your brand and attracts walk-ins. Make sure it’s visible, well-lit, and aligned with your salon’s aesthetic.
  16. Styling apron: Protects stylists’ clothing from water, colour stains, and chemicals. Look for adjustable, waterproof aprons that are easy to clean and comfortable to wear.

Conclusion

Having the right tools, setup, and systems helps you deliver a seamless experience every day. From your scissors and styling chairs to your booking and payment software, every item plays a role in shaping your client’s impression and your team’s efficiency.

Think of this checklist as your foundation. Get these essentials right, and you’ll spend less time fixing problems and more time growing your business, building client loyalty, and making people look and feel their best.
